This Privacy Policy describes how Marinly, LLC ("Marinly," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and protects your personal information when you use the Sage reading app ("the App"). By using the App, you agree to the practices described here.
Account information
When you sign in via Google or Apple, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from that provider. We store this to identify your account.
Reading data
Books you log, shelf assignments (Read, Currently Reading, Want to Read, Did Not Finish), star ratings, notes and reviews, and reading session dates.
Usage information
Pages visited, features used, search queries within the App, and interaction timestamps. This helps us improve the service and personalise recommendations.
Technical data
IP address, browser type, device type, and operating system. Collected automatically when you use the App.
We do not sell your personal data. We share information only with the following service providers, solely to deliver the App:
Supabase
Database and authentication provider. Stores your account details and all reading data.
Anthropic (Claude API)
Powers Ask Sage. The taste descriptions and questions you type into Ask Sage, along with relevant reading history, are sent to Anthropic to generate personalised recommendations.
ISBNdb
Our primary source for book metadata, cover images, and catalog enrichment.
Google Books API
Used for supplemental book discovery and metadata refresh. Some search queries you type may be sent to Google.
Resend
Sends account, security, and (if you opt in) marketing emails on our behalf. Your email address and message content pass through this provider.
Vercel
Hosts and serves the App.
Google / Apple
When you sign in with OAuth, your basic profile (name, email, picture) is shared with us by these providers.
We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of Marinly, our users, or the public.
New accounts are private by default. Someone must send a follow request, and you must approve it, before they gain any access to your reading activity.
Account-level privacy
You can switch between a private account (approval required for new followers) and a public account (anyone can follow immediately) at any time in Settings → Private account.
Per-shelf visibility
You can also hide any individual shelf from followers entirely — for example, keeping your Did Not Finish shelf private while sharing the rest — in Settings → Hide shelves from followers. A hidden shelf is invisible to followers even on a public account.
If someone follows you (and, for a private account, you’ve approved the request), they can see:
Followers cannot see anything beyond your shelf contents described above — your genre stats, reading pace, taste profile, and Ask Sage query history are never shared, regardless of who follows you.
We use cookies and similar technologies to maintain your login session and remember your preferences. Essential session cookies are required for the App to function. You can manage optional analytics cookies through your browser settings, though disabling them may affect functionality.
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account (Settings → Delete Account), all personal data — including your reading history, ratings, notes, and profile — is permanently and irreversibly erased. We cannot recover this data once deleted.
We protect your data using industry-standard encryption (TLS) in transit and encrypted storage at rest. While we take security seriously, no system is completely secure. If you discover a potential security vulnerability, please contact us immediately at john@marinly.com.
California residents may have additional rights under the CCPA. Contact us to make a request.
The App is not intended for users under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected such data, we will delete it immediately.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email. Your continued use of the App after receiving notice constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
